John Archer and Elizabeth Chaffer ©

Believed to have been born around 1757 John was Baptized in the St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Newport, Essex, on the 30th May 17631.  He was the son of John Archer & his wife Mary, and this record tells us that John’s father was a Glover.  A Glover was a person who made or sold gloves and the term was first used for an occupation in the 14th Century.

John married Elizabeth Chaffer in the Newport Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin on the 30th October 17862.  John was a Bachelor, Elizabeth a Spinster, the record indicates they were both from the Parish, and they both made their Mark.  The marriage was conducted by the Minister, James Grant, and the witnesses were John Woodby and John Cakebread.

The daughter of Thomas Chaffer, a Labourer & his wife Mary, Elizabeth was Baptized in St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Newport, Essex, on the 31st May, 17671.

Records indicate John & Elizabeth possibly had as many as twelve children: Sarah 1787; William 1789-1790; John 1792-1873; Thomas 1794; Alexander 1797, he married Anne Gapes 1820; Richard c1799-1802; twins Mary & William 1803; Peter c1804-1809; Charles; Peter; and Richard, all baptized 1810.  It appears all the children were baptised in St Mary the Virgin, Newport and on all John was listed as a Labourer3.

John died, at the age of 62, and was buried on 4th March, 1819, in the Parish Churchyard4.

Elizabeth, age 60, has been found on the 1830 List of Inhabitants of Essex3, living in the house of her son Alexander and his family.

At the age of 74, Elizabeth was buried 22nd January, 1840, also in the Parish Churchyard4
