Nicholas Baker and Jone Haine ©

Believed to be the son of Henry Baker and his wife Grissagon nee Valler it is thought Nicholas was born in Hedley Hampshire, and baptized in the the All Saints Parish Church, Hedley, Hampshire, on the 6th March, 16651

There are three villages called Headley in England, one in Hampshire, one in Surrey, and one in Berkshire, with all three sharing the same heath land habitat.  The village in Hampshire lies round a heath, for, as the name implies, Headley was in origin a settlement in a clearing.  The first known reference is in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, where it is called Hallege and the Lord was Count Eustace (of Boulogne).  The translation of the entry is: 'Earl Eustace holds five hides in Hallege which were assessed in the time of King Edward as three hides. In 1066 the village was held by Earl Godwin, and was reckoned as part of Sutton'.  To the west of the heath is the rectory and the church of All Saints with its massive ivy-covered tower.  In 1895 Headley in Hampshire became part of Surrey.  57km south-south-west of Hampshire Headley, is Headley in Surrey which is also only a small village.  This village can also trace its origins a long way back.  In the Domesday Book this village is called 'Hallega' which means a clearing in the heather, which is appropriate considering the villages position on the acid top of the North Downs. The overlord in 1066 was King Edward and in 1086 the Lord was Ralph of ForgEres, the total population was 22 households and the value to the Lord was £5.   St. Mary’s Church dates from the 13th Century, and a new church was consecrated in 1860 with the stones from the old church being used in the tower of the new church and a grotto in the churchyard.  Headley in Berkshire is 53km north-north-west of the Hampshire Hadley.

On the 9th May, 1689 Nicholas married Jone Haine2 in the St Andrews Parish Church, Farnham, Surrey.  Farnham, which sit roughly 12km north of Headley in Hampshire and about 4km west-south-west of Headley in Surrey, is one of Surrey’s most attractive towns.  Recent archaeological finds indicate Farnham was originally a Roman Settlement.  Lying midway between London and Winchester, Farnham was also a Saxon settlement called ‘Fern Hamm’ (the well watered meadow by the ferns).   In 1138, the Bishop of Winchester began building the castle, which became a convenient stopping-off point on travels between the two cities.  Today Farnham is a popular place to visit.

It is not known when or where Jone was born, but the areas around Headley (Hampshire & Surrey), including Farnham, boasted an early wool industry and were well known for good soil and bountiful crops.  Although we do not know what occupations Nicholas or Jone's families followed it is reasonable to assume they were involved in one of these agricultural endeavours and this may account for the apparent movements of the families.

A search of baptisms in Headley, show Nicholas and Jone had at least seven children baptised in All Saints Parish Church:  John 1690; Elizabeth 1692; Mary 1695; Grisagon 1697/8; Ann 1701, she married John Earle 1723; Sarah 1704; and Ruth 1707.  These records also indicate Nicholas was a ‘Renter of a small farm’, anther indication he may have been involved in the trade of produce or wool.

Jone died in 1750 and was laid to rest in the St Mary the Virgin Parish Churchyard, Headley, Surrey, on the 21st November3, it is estimated she was around 80years old.

At the age of Nicholas 88, died in 1753 and was buried in the St Mary the Virgin Parish Churchyard, Headley, Surrey, on the 22 July3.
