Richard Balcomb and Elizabeth Carter ©

Richard, the son of Richard Balcomb and his wife Hester (nee Russell), was baptized in Burwash, Sussex, on the 15th June 17121.

UK Register of Duties Paid for Apprentice Indentures, suggest that young Richard, was apprenticed to James Fuggel, Butcher of Frittenden in Kent, and that his father Richard was a Clothier, as on the 17th December, 17202, James Fuggel paid Dues for Richard.  Records indicate Richard's father died in 1720, and it is thought that his mother or even the Parish may have arranged for the apprenticeship.  Although it is unclear why he was apprenticed to a Butcher rather than a Clothier.  Frittenden is in an area which was normally a mixture of pastoral and arable land, and was also on the margin of the cloth making area which means it probably benefited from proximity to this industry.  It is also reasonable to assume Richard Seniors occupation of Clothier may have meant the family had connections in the area.

The next record we have of Richard is when he marries Elizabeth Carter, on the 27th April, 1732, in Burwash3.  The record indicates they were both from the parish of Burwash and had published Banns before the marriage.

Records indicate Elizabeth may have been the daughter of James and Elizabeth Carter, and that she was born in Burwash around 1710.  A baptism for Elizabeth has been located in Burwash on the 17th October, 17181

Ancestry Family Trees suggest Richard and Elizabeth had nine children: Elizabeth 1732; Lydia 1734; Richard 1737, he married Elizabeth Fuller 1761; Abraham 1738; John 1740; Mary 1742; Sarah 1744; Edward 1746; and Thomas 1748.

A search of the records indicate Richard may have died at the age of 56 and been been buried in Burwash in 1768, but to-date actual record has not yet been seen.

A probable burial for Elizabeth Balcomb in Burwash in 17734.  Identified as a widow, she was laid to rest in St Bartholomew on April 24th, she was also about 56years old.
