Origin / History of the Barton Name

This ancient and distinguished surname is thought to be of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is either a topographical name deriving from the Olde English "bere", barley, and "tun", enclosure.  Appearing as "Barton" in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, dated 942, and as "Bertone" in the Domesday Book of 1086, or a local name from any of the various places named with the above elements.  The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Aelfric aet Bertune, which was dated 1015, in the "Anglo-Saxon Name Register", during the reign of Ethelred the Unready, 978 - 1016.

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families.  They are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by family members.

The following is the description of the Barton Coat Of Arms, as listed in Burkes General Armory in the College of Arms Argent (silver or white in color), three boars' heads couped (cut smooth at the base of the neck) sable (black in color), armed argent (tusk showing, white in color).  The Crest bears a boars' head couped (cut smooth at the base of the neck) gules (red in color). The primary colors are Argent (silver in color) and sable (black).  The Motto 'Fide Et Fortitude, meaning 'By or With Faith and Courage'.
Research also uncovered a Coat of Arms granted to a Barton, who was Lord Mayor of London, 1416 - 1430, is an ermine shield, on a saltire sable, an annulet gold, voided of the first.  However, there is also no proof that this belongs to this branch of the Bartton family.
There are nearly thirty families with the surname of Barton that have a registered Coat of Arms. To try to connect them to a specific Barton Family would be almost impossible.
