James Buckby and Sarah Nichols©

It is believed James was the son of John Buckby and his wife Mary, and he was born in or around Maidwell, Northamptonshire about 16951

A record has been found for John Buckby marrying a Sarah Nichols in the Parish Church, Brixworth, Northamptonshire 20th September, 17192.  Although quite difficult to read, the record suggests both James and Sarah were both from the Parish of Maidwell, although there is no information to indicate why they choose to marry in Brixworth.  Maybe they both worked there.

Set in the rural county of Northamptonshire Brixworth lies about 8km south of Maidwell3.  The area has a rich historical heritage, with Bronze Age and Saxon pottery being discovered, and the remains of an oval settlement to the south, which is yet to be investigated.  There is also a Grade 1 listed Saxon church, and evidence of a Roman Villa to the north of the village.  Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as owned by the King, it later appears in the 12th Century Northamptonshire Survey as belonging to Simon.  Iron ore is quarried extensively in the parish and there is a brick and tile works to the south of the village.  The main crops produced are wheat and barley, and much of the surrounding land is given to pasture.

It is thought Sarah was born around the same time as James, and a baptism has been found for her in the All Saints Parish Church, Harpole. Baptised on the 27th January, 1698, Sarah was the daughter of William and Ann Nichols.  Harpole is roughly 12km south-sout-west of Brixworth and about 20kmsouth-south-east of Maidwell.

Parish records of the area suggest James and Sarah had up to thirteen children:   James 1720-1720; John 1722; Sarah 1723; Elizabeth 1725; Mary 1727; William 1729-1731; James 1732; Ann 1733; Thomas 1734; Jane 1736; Isabella; 1738; Richard 1741, he married Ann Patrick 1762; and Martha 1747.  It appears that at some time James & Sarah moved back to Maidwell, as the later children were baptised there.

James also died there in late March, 1749.  It is estimated he was about 54years old, and he was buried a few days after his death in the Parish Churchyard, on the 1st April5

Sarah lived for a further fifteen years, and at the estimated age of 69, was buried on the 23rd December, 1764, also in the Maidwell Churchyard5.
