William Butler and Mary Johnson ©

Records indicate William was born in Warwickshire around 1789, and it is believed that he was the son of William Butler and Sarah (nee Smith).  Bedworth Parish Church Records indicate he was baptized on the 31st January, 17911.

William married Mary Johnson on the 29th February, 1808, after Banns in the Parish Church in Bedworth2.  Both are recorded as being from the Parish of Bedworth, William was a Bachelor and Mary a Spinster, and both made their mark.  They were married by J Thickins, the Curate, and the witnesses were Joseph Brown and R. Wright.  It would appear that R. Wright may have been a member of the congregation and a regular witness to marriages, as he can be found as a witness on several other marriage records.  Baptismal records also indicate William and Mary were both only about 18years old at the time of their marriage.

Mary, the daughter of George Johnson and Mary (nee Bradbury), was born around 1790 and baptized, at ‘6years old nearly’, on 22nd May, 1796, in the Parish Church, Bedworth1.  Baptized at the same time were younger siblings: Geo; Ann; and Thomas.  Records indicate, like his father, William was a Weaver, possible using a hand loom to make ribbon.

It is not known exactly how many children William and Mary had, but a search of the Parish Records of Bedworth, Warwickshire, England, and the Census, indicate they had at least six, all born in Bedworth; William 1815-1826; Mary 1816-1820; George 1818, he married Maria Checkley 1842; Ann 1821; Mary 1823-1823, and Thomas 1826.  It is interesting to note that records suggest William and Mary had Ann, Mary & Thomas baptized in the Independent Church in Bedworth.

It is thought Mary died, at the age of 39 in 1830, possibly from completions of childbirth, and a burial has been located for a Mary Butler, in Bedworth, on 28th February, 18303.

Found on the 1841 Census4, William's age is recorded as 50.  He is recorded as a Widower, living at Badders Yard, Bedworth, and with him are: Ann 20; Thos 10; and Mary 5.  It is thought Mary may have been a granddaughter.  William's occupation is recorded as Weaver, and birthplace of all is given as Warwickshire.  Ann's occupation is also given as Weaver, and Thos is recorded as a Silk Winder.   Recorded as a 64year old Widower in the 1851 Census4, William is living at Fleet Yard, Bedworth.  With him were son Thomas 25, and daughter Mary 20.  William's occupation is given as a Hand Loom Weaver, and birthplace is again recorded as Bedworth, Warwick for all.

A search of the Bedworth Parish Burials revealed that William, recorded as 58years old, from Bedworth, was buried on 12th December, 18543
