Origin / History of the Checkley Name

Of Anglo-Saxon origin, Checkley is a habitation name from any one of three places, Checkley in Staffordshire (recorded as 'Cedla' 1086, and as 'Checkeleg' in 1196); Checkley in Cheshire (recorded as Checkley in 1130; and Checkley in Herefordshire (recorded as 'Chakkeleya' in 1195).  All place names share the same meaning, which is from the Olde English personal name 'Ceacca', and 'leah', clearing, glade; hence, 'Ceacca's clearing'. During the Middle Ages, when migration for the purpose of job-seeking was becoming more common, people often took their former village name as a means of identification, thus resulting in a wide dispersal of the name. In modern times the surname can be found as Checkly and Checkley.

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families.  They are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by family members.

A Coat of Arms granted to one Checkley family depicts a black chevron between three red cinquefoils on a silver shield.
