William Clarke and Sarah Robins ©

Very little is known about William & Sarah, except for their marriage and baptisms of their children.  However, it is estimated William was born around 1735 in or around Gloucestershire.  A possible baptism has been located in Longborough, William the son of William Clarke was Baptised Marh 23 1734.  Longborough is approximately 20kl south-south-east of Weston Subedge.

William and Sarah married in Western Subedge, Gloucestershire, on the 2nd August 17621.  Both William and Sarah were said to be from the Parish of Weston Subege and both made their mark.  The Rector, William Bell performed the marriage and the witnesses were Stephen Robins, possibly Sarah’s father, and George Grinner.  Weston Subedge is a small village in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England, close by the border with Worcestershire and 5km south-west of Bretforton2.  Said to have been occupied by the Romans since about 200, and close by is the Kiftsgate Stone, a holed standing stone, where, in Saxon times, the Court of the Hundred met and public announcements were proclaimed.

It is thought Sarah’s parents may have been Stephen and Hester and a possible baptism has been located in Mickleton for a Sarah on 4th February, 1738.  Mickleton is about 2km north-west of Western Sub Edge3

Records indicate William and Sarah had seven children, all baptised in Weston Sub Edge: Jenny 1762; William 1767-1768; William 1769; Stephen 1774; John 1775; Hester 1778; and Thomas 1785, he married Hannah Hartwell 1808.

It is thought William died around 1797, and a possible burial has been located in Weston Subedge for the 22nd February 18794.  A possible burial for Sarah has also been located in Weston Subedge4, on the 1st February 1811.
