Florence Clunes and E.L.B. Carpenter ©

Born on the 18th September, 18961, Florence May Clunes was the fourth child and third daughter of George Raines Clunes and Rose Anne (formerly Ralph, nee Lutherborough), she was born on the family property 'Four Mile', just outside the town of Inglewood.  Her birth was registered in Warwick a month later by her mother.  The record shows her father as a Shearer and that she had a sister, Ethel, age 2.  It is not known where, when, or if, Florence was baptized.

It is assumed Florence and her siblings attended school in the local area, but to date no records have been located to support this assumption.  Family story has indicated she was a good horse woman, and that at some stage Florence worked as a nurse in or around Stanthorpe, again no documentation has been located to support this.

On the 29th August 1913, at the age of 17, Florence gave birth to a son, Harold Edmund Clunes1.  When Florence registered the birth in Warwick a few weeks later, no father was given, and she gave her address as Four Mile, Inglewood.  Family story indicates Florence left home shortly after the birth of Harold, and he was raised by George & Rose Anne, as their own child.

Just over two years later, on the 28th December, 1915, under the name Florence May Clunas, Florence married Ernest Leon Bertram Carpenter in St Mark’s Anglican Church, Warwick2.  Ernest was a 22year old Stock Inspector, a Bachelor, whose usual place of residence was given as Texas, New South Wales, his parents were William Edward Carpenter, a Teacher, and Catherine (nee McLean).  Florence gave her age as 21, although she was only 19, a Spinster whose occupation was given as Home Duties, and usual place of residence as Inglewood, her parents were listed as George Clunas, a Labourer and Rose Anne Lutherborough.

Ernest and Florence are said to have lived in a number of places in and around the NSW / QLD border as Ernest followed his occupation as a Stock Inspector.  Their first daughter, Nesta Iris Cavell, was born in 1916, followed in 1920 by Alma Joan.  Personal recollections of her daughters tell that after the family had spent many years in the New South Wales / Queensland border area, and when Ernest retired, around 1955, they moved to a house in Wakefield Street, Sandgate.  The house is no longer there, removed when the Freemason Home was built, but family story tells that a tree which Florence planted on the footpath outside the house when they moved in, still stands today.

Nothing more is known of Florence's life, except that she died, on 29th December 1960, after an 18month long battle with Cancer of the Stomach3.  Her death was registered by her husband a few days later on the 6th January, 1961.  Her two daughters are recorded on her death certificate, but there is no mention of her son.

Florence was cremated at the Mount Thompson Crematorium on the 30th December, 19603.  It is not known exactly where her ashes were placed, but it is said there is a memorial plaque marking the site in the Mount Thompson Crematorium grounds.  The plaque reads:

IN MEMORY OF

MY BELOVED WIFE

FLORENCE MAY CARPENTER

29th DECEMBER 1960

64 YEARS

Ernest died on the 13th July, 1973 and was cremated on 16th July, 1973, at the Mt Thompson Crematorium.  It is not known where his ashes were placed or if there is a plaque.
