Origin / History of the Cook Name

Of Anglo-Saxon origin, it is an occupational name for a cook, seller of cooked meats, or the keeper of an eating house. The origin is from the Olde English "coc", ultimately from the Latin "cocus", cook.  It has the distinction of being recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, when one Galter Coc was noted in Essex. The surname is also widespread in early Scottish records.

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families.  They are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by family members.

There are no less than fifty Coats of Arms for the name Cook.  The one most associated with the name is a gold shield with a red chevron between two lions passant guardant.  There is no evidence to suggest this Mott family has any connection with this Coat of Arms.
