Origin / History of the Diment Name

Of Anglo-Saxon origin, this interesting surname is from ‘Dayman’, an Olde English pre 7th Century personal and occupational name.  The first element ‘day’ derives from ‘deye’ a keeper of livestock and in a 1363 statute we find enumerated ‘cow-herds, shepherds, swine-herds, dyes and all other keepers of livestock’.  The suffix ‘man(n)’ was often added to an occupational name; hence ‘the keeper of animals’. The surname is first recorded in the early half of the 13th Century: Dayman Buntyng is registered in Cambridgeshire in 1221; Stephen Deyman is found in the 1224 ‘Pipe Rolls of Buckinghamshire’; Thomas Dymande is noted in the 1332 Subsidy Rolls of Surrey; Robert Dymond appears in the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire; and Margaret Dimond married Thomas Kingston 1695 in London..The excrescent ‘t’ or ‘d’ was not in widespread use before the 17th Century.  In the modern idiom the surname has many variant spellings, including Deman, Demant, Diamond, Dimant, Diment, and Dyment.

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families.  They are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by family members.

A Coat of Arms granted to the Dimont family depicts three red mullets on a silver shield. On the Crest is a cross crosslet in pale surmounted by a diagonal arrow pointing downwards. However it is unlikely this crest is associated with this line of Diments.
