Origin / History of the Gratwicke Name

The surname Gratwicke is an English locational name first found in Sussex where the family held a Manor, Greatwick Farm, Cowfold, Sussex.  There are numerous spellings recorded and include: Gatwick; Gotwich; Gotwick; Gradwick; Gratewyk; Grattick; Gratweeke; Gratwich; Gratwick; Gratwick; Gratwicke; Gratwike; Grauetwyk; Greatwich; Greatwick; Grottick; Grotwic; Grotwich.  The 1288 Azzize Rolls of Sussex include Stephen de Gratewyk; the Subsidy Rolls of Ewhurst Sussex lists Thomas Grauetwyk in 1327 & John de Grautewyk in 1332 both; and the 1379 Poll Tax Ewhurst Sussex has Willelmus & Johannes Gratwyk.  There are also many mentions in the IGI 1549 – 1791 in Sussex and in London.
