John Guppy and Mary Diment ©

A record has been located for a John Guppy baptized in Halstock on 2^nd August, 1724, son of John Guppy jnr and his wife Mary¹.  It is interesting to note that there is another Guppy baptisms on the same page of the register.

Halstock is approximately 15km north-north-east of Netherbury and the name means ‘holy outlying farmstead’ from Old English ‘hälig’ and ‘stoc’.   The baptism record give no indication of the occupation of the parents, but it is highly likely they were agricultural workers of some kind, and as such dependent on seasonal work and therefore possibly quite mobile.

John married Mary Diment in the Parish Church in Netherbury on the 10^th August, 1763³, after their Banns were read in the same church in June and July 1763².  Both were of the Parish and both made their mark.  The officiating clergy was Thos Rayne and the witnesses were Jas Wilkes and Bennet Coombe. 

It is estimated Mary Diment was born around 1735, and a baptism in Symondsbury on the 5^th March, 1735 has been located¹.  This record indicates Mary was the daughter of Robert and his wife Hester.  Symondsbury lies 7km south-south-east of Netherbury.

Searches of Netherbury Parish records indicate that John and Mary had at least five children: Thomas 1764-1841; Sarah 1766-1847; John 1769, he married Ann Symes 1791; Samuel 1771-1826 and Martha 1772, all baptized Netherbury & Salway.

A possible burial for John has been located in Netherbury & Salway⁴ on the 2^nd February, 1776.   To-date I haven’t been able to positively identify the burial of his wife Mary, it is possible she re-married as she had small children when John died.
