John Guppy and Mary Eggerton ©

Guppy is quite a prevalent name in and around the Netherbury area of Dorset during the 1700-1800s, and it is difficult to positively identify individuals in the parish records.  This is especially difficult in the case of baptisms which occurred in the earlier years when, in general, only the father’s name was recorded.  However, most references I have come across while researching the Guppy connection record John Guppy & Mary (nee Eggerton) as part of this lineage, so for the time being I am making the assumption this is correct.

It is estimated that my John was born around 1695, probably in close proximity to Netherbury and possibly the son of Robert & wife Elizabeth.  A possible baptism has been located in Bridport, Dorset1, on the 18th June 1698.

John possibly married a Mary Daw in Halstock in January 1714.  It is believe Mary died around 17222, it is not clear if they had any children.

On the 19th December, 1723, John Guppy and Mary Eggerton were married in St Mary the Virgin the Parish Church, Netherbury2.

Mary Eggerton is thought to have also been born around 1695, and again a possible baptism for her has been located in Bridport, Dorset1 on the 11th August, 1697.  This record indicates her father was John Eggerton.

Parish records on Ancestry Family Trees  and FamilySearch suggest John and Mary nee Eggerton had at least six children:  Elizabeth 1724, baptised South Perrot; Mary 1726; Agnes 1728-1731, baptised Beaminster; Grace 1737; Robert 1739, baptised Halstock; and John 1746, baptised Netherbury, he married Mary Dimet 1763. Whitchurch Canoricorum is approximately 8km south of Bridport.

The baptismal record of son John in 1746, show the family were from Portesham1.  However, the different locations of the baptismal records suggests the family regularly moved to where work was available.  All these places where the children were baptised were traditionally agricultural, with numerous farms and manorial estates and, with the exception of Portesham, are within a 10km radius of Netherbury, Portesham is approximately 25km south-south-west of Netherbury, but it also had a number of large estates and farms.  South Perrot is about 8km north of Beaminster and 9km north of Netherbury and was featured in a Time Team episode in 2005 as the place where Early Bronze Age and Roman artefacts have been found.

Unfortunately, none of the records indicate John’s occupation, or where he may have worked, I can only speculate that he was probably an agricultural worker of some description.  He may have even taken advantage of the annual ‘hiring fair’, which was held in Beaminster.

A possible burial been found for John in Halstock on the 1st July 17503, but to-date Mary date of burial has not been found.
