George Hartwell and Mary Simpson ©

Born around 1760 George, the son of Henry Hartwell and Ann (nee Lightfoot), was baptized in the Ebrington Parish Church, Gloucestershire, on the 22nd March 17611.

To-date no indication has been located of the occupation of Henry or his father, so we have no information about Henry's early life.  Although we can assume the family were most likely involved in some form of agricultural or farming activities.

Banns were published in the St Paul, Broadwell Parish Church 1st, 7th, 15th & 25th July, 1784 for the marriage of  George and Mary Simpson, and they were then married on the 18th August2.  George was recorded as being from the Parish of Ebrington and Mary from the Parish of Broadwell.  George made his Mark and Mary signed her name, the officiating Curate was Sim Padget and the witnesses Wm Hodgkins and John Taques.

Located 15km south of Ebrington, Broadwell is a pleasant little village with a broad village green ringed by Cotswold stone cottages.  The centre of the village is the 12th Century church of St Paul.  Beyond the green is a handsome Georgian manor house and there are several 17th Century farmhouses, and a gentle stream sedately winds its way through the village.  Broadwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, with 53 households, under the Lordship of Evesham Abbey.  During the later Middle Ages the estate belonged to the Benedictine order of Monks.

Mary, the daughter of Charles Simpson and his wife Elizabeth (nee Yeates), was baptized in the Badsey Parish Church on the 28th June 17583.  Badsey is approximately 4km south-east of Ebrington and 4.5km south-south-east of Broadwell.

Records indicate George & Mary had eight children: Hannah 1784, she married Thomas Clarke 1808; Elizabeth 1787; Charles 1789; Thomas 1791-1792; William 1793; George 1795; Mary 1797; and Ann 1805.

George, from Badsey, was buried in the Parish Church Badsey  on the 25th April 1823, he was 63years old4.

The 1841 Census5 shows Mary, age 83 born in the County, living in the house of William Hartwell, believed to be her son, his wife Mary and their six children.

Mary was buried in the Badsey Parish Churchyard on 22nd November 1847, her age was recorded as 90years4.
