Henry Hartwell and Anne Lightfoot ©

Henry, the son of William Hartwell and Elizabeth (nee Mullis), was baptized in the St Eadburgha’s Parish Church, Ebrinbgton, Gloucestershire, on the 20th March, 17141

On the 25th September, 1742, in the same Parish Church and after Banns, Henry married Anne Lightfoot2.  The record indicates they were both from Ebrington.  Ebrington, known to local people as 'Yubberton', is a quiet little village in the northern most tip of Gloucestershire, lying roughly 15km south-west of Stratford-upon-Avon.  Abundant supplies of spring water encouraged settlements in the area long before the Roman occupation, and the history of Ebrington has always been bound up with that of the land.  Recorded in the Domesday Book as having 33 quite large households and two mills, the value to the Lord was £12 in 1066.  A Manor has existed at Ebrington for several centuries, and the ancient church of St. Eadburgha shows many monuments to the Fortescue family, who have owned it for over 500 years.   Just a short distance from Ebrington is the National Trust property of Hidcote Manor whose Cotswold gardens are said to be the most beautiful gardens of the 20th Century.  It is reasonable to assume both Henry and Ann may have worked on the land or in the houses of one of these estates.

Baptised on the 10th January, 1726, in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Childs Wickham with Chapelry of Murcot, Ann was the daughter of Thomas Lightfoot and his wife Ann.  Childs Wickham lies approximately 10km east-north-east of Ebrington.

FamilySearch Records and Ancestry Family Trees indicate Henry and Anne had at least eight children: William 1743; Mary 1746; Elizabeth 1748; Richard 1751; Samuel 1754; Thomas; 1758; George 1761, he married Mary Simpson 1784; and Joseph 1764.

It is believed Henry died, at the age of 67, in 1781 and was buried in the Ebrington Parish Churchyard on the 16th November3

It is thought Ann died in April 1778, and it is estimated she was about 55years old.  She was buried  on the 23rd April, also in the Parish Churchyard, Ebrington3.
