Origin / History of the Hawkins Name

From the Middle English given name Hawkin, a diminutive of Hawk with the Anglo-Norman French hypocoristic suffix 'in', or of Hal a per form of Harry, with the originally Low German suffix 'kin'. Hawkins is thought to be one of the  most noteable Anglo Saxon surnames.  The first record of the name Hawkins was found by researchers near Folkestone in Kent, England and it is thought likely they were there before the Norman Conquest and the reign of Duke William of Hastings in 1066.  Records indicate Hawkins families were seated at the Hawking of Kent with manors and estates in that shire.  The first record is of Osbert Hawkins (Lord of the Manor) around the time of Henry II.  The family branched into Monmouthshire, Somerset, Cornwall and Plymouth, while John and Joseph Hawkins appear in military rolls, in Ireland during the mid 17th century and are recorded as receiving lands for their services. On the 1890 Census, the Hawkins family name is centered around Antrim, Galway and Cork.  Variations include: Haughan (Ireland), Hawken, Hawkin, Hawking(s), Hawkynns, Haykin, Hoggins and Huggins.  Yet, the most common is Hawkins

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families.  They are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by family members.

The Hawkins Coat of Arms is made up of a silver shield with a black 'saltire' (St. Andrew's Cross) on it.  Five gold 'fleur-de-lis' (French symbol) appear on the saltire.  The Crest has a gold stag on a green mound and the Motto is: ‘Toujours pręt’, which translated means ‘Always ready’.
