Thomas Hawkins and Mary Crouch ©

Thomas Hawkins (Hoggins), son of John and Mercy (nee Toye) was baptized on the 22nd July, 1729, in the Parish Church, Burwash1.

To-date no clues to Thomas’ early life have been located.  However, we do know that on the 20th June, 1756, Thomas married Mary Crouch, by Banns, in the Burwash Parish Church2.  Thomas (recorded as Hockings) of the Parish was a Bachelor, and Mary, also of the Parish a Single Woman.   William Dearling, the Curate of Etchingham performed the marriage.  Thomas signed his name and Mary made her mark.  The witnesses were William Crouch (possibly Mary’s brother) and William Carby.

Mary is believed to have been born around 1730.  A probable baptism has been located in Ticehurst, for a Mary, the daughter of Samuel and Eleanor, who was baptized on the 23rd June, 17321.

Parish Records suggest Thomas and Mary had at least five children baptized in Burwash: Philadelphia 1757; John 1759; Thomas 1762, he married first Mary Balcomb 1781, and secondly Sarah Balcomb 1801; Jesse 1770; and Sarah 1775.

Records3 suggest Thomas died in Burwash at the age of 80years and was buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard on the 18th April, 1799.

A reference3 to a possible burial for Mary has also been located in Burwash, on the 8th December, 1814, but to-date record has not been sighted.  It is estimated she was about 80years old.
