Richard Head and Margaret Clarke ©

It is estimated, from information on other documentation held, that Richard was born in Surrey around 1760.  A baptism has been found for a Richard Head, son of Richard and Susan (nee Strudwick), on the 1st June, 1760, at St John the Baptist Parish Church in Wonersh, Surrey1

Records indicate Richard married Margaret Clarke on 29th July, 1787, in St James, the Parish Church, Abinger, Surrey.  Both are recorded as from the Parish and both signed their names.  The officiating minister was Curate S Hoole and the witness Frances Simmonds2.

Believed to have been born around 1760, a search of the local parish records has to-date failed to reveal a baptism for Margaret.

However, records of the area have indicated that Richard and Margaret had at least six children: Mary 1788; Richard 1790; and George 1792; baptised in Shere; and baptised in Albury: Anne 1798; Lettice 1800; and Lucy 1807, she married James Inwood 1838.

The 1841 Census3 has Richard and Margaret, both aged 80, living at Middle Farm, Albury, Surrey.  Both are recorded as born in the County of Surrey and Richard's occupation is given as Agricultural Labourer.

Margaret died in the Parish of Albury, in the Guilford Union Registration District, on the 19th December, 1841.  Her death was registered on the 23rd December and the Informant was an Amelia Jelly, who was present at the death4.  Margaret was 81years old, the wife of Richard Head an Agricultural Labourer and the cause of her death was recorded as Old Age.   She was buried on the 25th December, 1841, in the Parish Churchyard in Wonersh5.

At the age of 82years, Richard died on the 1st October, 1842, in the Guilford Union Registration District, in the Parish of Albury4.  His occupation was given as an Agricultural Labourer and, like his wife before him, the cause of his death was given as Old Age.  Again the Informant was Amelia Jelly, and she registered his death on the 5th October.  Richard was laid to rest, also in the Wonersh Parish Churchyard, on the 7th October5

It is not known if there is, or was, a marker for either Margaret of Richard’s final resting places.  Also, the relationship of Richard & Margaret to Amelia is uncertain, however according to the 1841 Census there was a John Jelly, his wife Millier and family living a few doors down from Richard & Margaret, so it is plausible to assume she was a neighbour and friend.  It is not known if Richard ever took possession of the estate left by his father in 1801.
