Edward Inwood & Elizabeth Elliott ©

Edward was the son of Edward Inwood and his wife Ann, nee Edser, and he was baptised on the 7th April, 1662, in St Peter & St Paul the Parish Church in Ewhurst, Surrey1A 1719 Apprentices' Indentures record indicates Edward Snr was a Wheelwright3

The next record we have of Edward is when he marries Elizabeth Elliott on the 11th November, 1890, in St Nicholas the Cranleigh Parish Church2.  This record shows Edward followed his father's occupation of Wheelwright, it also states Elizabeth was a Spinster.  Cranleigh is 3km south-south-west of Ewhurst.  Until the mid-1860s, the village was usually spelt Cranley, but it was changed to avoid confusion with nearby Crawley.  However, the older spelling is preserved by the Cranley Hotel in the middle of the village.  The origin of the name is recorded in the Pipe Rolls as both Cranlea in 1166 and Cranelega in 1167.   A little later in the Feet of Fines of 1198 the name is written as Cranele.  Etymologists consider all these versions to be the fusion of the Old English words 'Cran', meaning 'crane', and 'Leoh that together mean 'a woodland clearing visited by cranes'.  The figure of a crane adorns the old drinking water fountain of 1874 which can still be found in the middle of the village in 'Fountain Square'.

The daughter of John Elliott, Elizabeth was baptised in the Parish Church of St James in Abinger, Surrey, on the 21st June 16721.  Abinger St James lies approximately 6km north-north-east of Ewhurst  and 8.5km north-north-east of Cranleigh.

A document which shows Edward paid dues for an Apprentice has been located.  This record, dated Tuesday 10th November, 1719, identified Edward as a Wheelwright of Ewhurst, Surrey, and names his apprentice as William Bromfied, of Ewhurst.  It also shows the apprenticeship was for 7years and that Edward paid £5. 2s. 6p in Duty on the 15th July3.

A search of Parish records indicate Edward and Elizabeth had at least 3 children: Edward 1693-1693; Edward 1695, he married Sarah Longhurst 1720; and Elizabeth 1704.

Records also indicate Elizabeth died at the age of 48, and was buried in Ewhurst Parish Churchyard on the 24th March, 17204.

It appears Edward may have remarried in 17252, as a record has been located for Edward, a Widower, marrying a Joan Francis in Ewhurst on the 11th April.

Edward died at the age of 78, and was buried in Ewhurst Parish Churchyard on the 14th November, 17404.
