Origin / History of the Johnson Name

An Anglo-Scottish patronymic surname of medieval origins, this name is recorded in the spellings of Jonson, Johnson, Joinson, Joynson and the incredibly popular Jones, although Jones is always treated as a separate surname. However, all forms derive from John which is itself from the Hebrew name "Yochanan", meaning "God has favoured me (with a son)".
