Samuel Johnson and Ann Spencer ©

A baptism of Samuel Johnson, son of John Johnson and his wife Ann (nee Pickard) has been located in Bedworth on the 2nd November, 17341.

On the 18th November 17532, Samuel married Ann Spencer, also in the Parish Church Bedworth.  This record states they were both from the Parish of Bedworth.

Ann the daughter of Samuel Spencer and his wife Sarah, was baptised on the 9th June 17321, in St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Walsgrave on Sowe, Warwickshire.  Walsgrave is approximately 5km south-south-east of Bedworth, a sizeable village based around agriculture and coal mining.  Walsgrave has reputedly been in existence for approximately 1,000 years, with the first mention of a chapel in Walsgrave-on-Sowe (then known as Sowe) in 1221.  It is likely that the chapel would have been built after 1086, as there is no reference in the Domesday BookSt Mary's Church currently stands on the site of the former chapel. The original graveyard for the church was covered over around 19553.

Parish records and Ancestry Family Trees indicate Samuel and Ann had at least seven children, all baptised in Bedworth: Ann 1754; Mary 1755-1756; Samuel 1758; Thomas 1759; Sarah 1761; John 1765; and George 1766, he married Mary Bradbury 1759.

At the age of 75 Samuel was laid to rest in the Sutton Coldfield Parish Churchyard on the 22nd April 18084.  Sutton Coldfield lies approximately 30km south-south-east of Bedworth and first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. It is a name commonly found across the country and comes from the Old English suth tun meaning 'south farm'. It is not known where it was south of.  It is also not known why Samuel was there.

Just two years later Ann died in Hospital and was buried in Bedworth on the 16th May, 18104.
