Thomas Lightfoot and Ann ©

Thomas, the son of Edwardus Lightfoot and his wife Grace (nee Aldington) was baptised in St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Childswyckham, on the 14th July, 16951

Originally part of Gloucestershire, the village of Childswyckham was transferred Worcestershire in 1931.  Situated within the flat open landscape of the Vale of Evesham, it is an area predominantly of market gardening, arable and pasture land, with surrounding fields defined by hedgerows.  The name Childswyckham is believed to have derived from 'Child', the young son of a nobleman, 'wick', a clearing in the wood and 'ham', short for hamlet.  Its history can be traced back to Roman times as coins and pottery of this era were found in fields on the old Roman road from Worcester to London which came through the village.  Appearing in the 1086 Domesday Book, the village consisted of 44 very large households and its value to the Lord was recorded as £16.  The 15th Century spire of the original Norman church, St Mary the Virgin, is a local landmark and can be seen for several miles.

It is thought Thomas married around 1720, his wife’s name believed to be Ann, but to-date no record of his marriage has been located.

A search of the parish registers of Childswyckham suggest Thomas and Ann had several children: Mary 1723; Ann 1726, she married Henry Hartwell 1742; Edward c1729; William 1733; and John 1735.

St Mary the Virgin Parish records indicate Thomas died at the age of 63, and was buried in the churchyard on the 4th June, 16582.

Ann died in 1763 and was buried in the Parish church on the 22nd December2.
