William Mott and Susannah Smith©

Little is known about William, but it is believed he was born around 1760.  It is not known who William parents were or where he was born, but it is thought to have been in or around Aldham in Essex.

We do know that William married Susannah Smith in the Parish Church Aldham, on the 25th October, 1785, after Banns were read in the previous weeks1.  William, a Bachelor and Susannah, a Spinster, are said to have both been from the Parish of Aldham.  They were married by Jas Cooke (Clergy), William signed his name and Susannah made her mark.  The witnesses were John Smith and Ann Smith, possibly Susannah’s parents.

Susannah was born in Aldham, on the 16th April, 17632.  The daughter of John Smith and Hannah (nee Butler) she was baptised in St Margaret and St Catherine Parish Church, Aldham, on the 5th June, the same year2.  Located approximately 7km west of Colchester in Essex, and covering roughly 16km, Aldham appeared in the Domesday Book of 1066 as having just 4 small households, with a value to Lord Leofeva of under £2.  Today Aldham is still a small and mainly agricultural village, with a population of around 500.

There are numerous records that show Motts have been in Essex for many generations, and from 1250 until the late 1600s several Motts are recorded as being either the Bailiff or Mayor of Colchester.  There is also mention of a ‘Mott’s Cottage’ in Aldham in 1401.  However, no affiliation to these Motts has yet been established.

Parish records indicate William and Susannah had nine children: Isaac 1786; Sarah 1788-1791; Hannah 1789; William Ruffell 1791, he married Mary Ann Johnson 1819; Susanna 1794; Sarah 1796; Elizabeth 1798; John 1801; and Sophia 1805.

To-date I have been unable to establish when or where William and Susannah died or were buried.
