John Savall and his wife Elizabeth (possibly Lingard) ©

The son of John Savall and his wife Elizabeth, it is believed John was born around 1739.  A possible baptism in the Hat field Broad Oak Independent Church, Hatfield Heath, Essex, on the 15th January, 1740 for John Savell, son of John and Elizabeth of Sheering has been found1The name Sheering is probably derived from Anglo-Saxon for ‘settlement of the people of Scir’. There are several early moated sites on either side of the main road (called The Street) in Sheering Village, Mesolithic flints and late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pottery have been found in the southwest, a Roman stone coffin was found in the south, near Sheering Hall, and there is Roman brick in the church.  In the Domesday Book, Sheering appears as a substantial settlement with 32acres of meadow, woodland for 100 swine, a mill, and the unusual distinction of possessing a mule - one of the only two mules mentioned anywhere in the book.  Hatfield Heath is approximately 1.5km north-north-east of Sheering.

A search of marriage records on Ancestry indicate John may have married Elizabeth Lingard in Stow Maries in 1767.  Stow Maries is approximately 15km south-south-east of Chemsford and roughly 35km south-south-east of Sheering.

Essex Parish Records suggest John & Elizabeth had at least three children, baptised in Little Samford, Essex: Susannah 1770, Elizabeth 1771; and Charles 1773, he married Rachael Thurgood in 1799.

These same record indicate John died in Little Sampford May 1784, and Elizabeth in February 1797.  To-date the only documentation sighted in the Baptism of John.
