George Sollis and Sarah Ann Robins ©

George Sollis was the fourth son of Daniel Sollis and Amelia (nee Powell).  He was born 18th April, 18451, in Broad Marston near Pebworth, in the Registration District of Evesham in the Counties of Worcestershire & Gloucestershire.  He was baptised on the 1st June, 18452, in the Parish Church, Pebworth, Gloucestershire.

At the age of 5, George appears on the 1851 Census3 of Bretforton, living at Lower Farm, with his parents Daniel and Amelia and brothers: John age 15; Job age 14; and Charles age 11.

The 1861 Census3 shows he is with still living with his parents, and brothers Job and Charles, but now at Clay Brook, Badsey, another village in the area of Evesham.  George's age is given as 16, and his occupation is listed as Agricultural Labourer.

On the 15th September, 1864, George, recorded as age 21, and a Batchelor, married Sarah Ann Robins, an 18year old Spinster, in St James, the Parish Church at Badsey4.  George signed his name (George Salis) and Sarah made her mark.  Witnesses were William Knight and Eliza Robins.  Eliza was Sarah’s sister and it is thought William was possibly her cousin.

Baptized in St James, the Parish Church, Badsey, on the 11th June, 18481, Sarah is the daughter of William Robins and Hannah (nee Knight).

Sarah appears, age 2, on the 1851 Census3, living in Badsey Lane, Badsey with parents William and Hannah and sisters; Eliza, age 9; and Charlotte, age 7.  The 1861 Census shows 12year old Sarah, along with her parents and siblings:  Charlotte 17; William 9; Elizabeth 7; Maria 6; Emma 4; Ellen 2; and George age 1month, are still in Badsey.

Records indicate that George and Sarah stayed on in Badsey for a couple of years after their marriage and it is there that their son John was born in 1865.  They then spent a little time in Dorsington, Gloucestershire, where daughter Ellen was born in 1867, she married Herbert David Clarke 1884.  The family moved to South Littleton, near Bretforton, Worcestershire, where their daughter Mary was born in 1870.

George and Sarah are recorded on the 1871 Census3 living at South Littleton, Worcestershire with children: John 6; Ellen 4; and Mary A age 1.  George's occupation is Agricultural Labourer and Sarah is recorded as a Gloveress.  Gloving was a cottage industry whereby factory owners actively engaged large numbers of out-workers to stitch and complete gloves in their own homes, and this was a useful means for farm-worker's wives to supplement the family income.

Sadly, on 7th January, 1878, George died in Bretforton5, at the age of 32, his cause of death is recorded as Pneumonia, his wife Sarah Ann was the Informant.  He was buried on the 11th January in St Leonards Parish Church6.  Records indicate it is possible Sarah may have been carrying George’s daughter Elizabeth at the time of his death.

It is believed Sarah married a George Hall late in 1879, as Sarah, age 31, is recorded on the 1881 Census3 as the wife of George Hall, age 22.  They are living at The Cross, Bretforton with Mary Sollis age 7; Elizabeth age 3; and Ernest Hall age 1.  George's occupation is given as Agricultural Labourer and Sarah's as a Gloveress.

By 1891 George, age 32, and Sarah age 42, are living in Main Street, New Inn3.  Their occupations are given as Innkeeper and Market Gardener and Innkeeper's Assistant, and the household now included: Mary Sollis 17, a Waitress: Lizzie 13; Ernest 11; Minnie 9; Kate 7; Charlie 5; these five are as recorded as Scholars, Alice M 3; and George 1.  Also recorded at the address is a lodger, John Eden, age 50, a Market Gardener's Labourer.

The family are still living at New Inn in 19013, George is still listed as Innkeeper and Market Gardener, but now is also an Employer, there is no occupation listed for Sarah, her age 52.  Still living at home are: Ernest 21, a Market Gardener's son; Minnie 19, a Dressmaker; Kate 17, a School Teacher; Charles 15, a Market Gardener's son; Elsie 13; George 11; and a Charlotte M Robins, Niece, age 14.  Sarah’s bother George was Charlotte’s father, his wife had died in 1896 and when her father re-married and more children were born, the children from his previous marriage were sent to live with other relatives.

A record has been located which shows George Hall died in 1908, and the 1911 Census3 shows Sarah, now age 62, as a Widow and Head of the Household.  Her occupation is given as Inn Keeper at the New Inn, Bretforton, and it appears Sarah completed and signed this document herself.  On a visit to Bretforton I found the New Inn located at the top end of Main Street in Bretforton.  This building still exists, but no longer an Inn, it is now a private residence.

Sarah died on the 14th October, 1916, she was 68years old5.  She died at New Inn, where she was the Inn Keeper, and the cause of death was given as Acute Pneumonia.  The death was registered by Kate Boulton, who is recorded as her daughter.  It is assumed Sarah is buried in the Bretforton Churchyard, but this is still to be confirmed.
