Daniel Solice and Amelia Powell ©

Born on the 10th November, 18061 in Broad Marston, Daniel Solice was the son of William Solice and Ann (nee Fletcher), and he was baptized in St Peter’s Parish Church, Pebworth, Gloucestershire, on the 7th December, 18061.  Both a village and a Parish, Pebworth, which also includes the hamlet of Broad Marston, was in Gloucestershire until 1931, but is now is in Worcestershire and sits about 10km north-north-east of Badsey.  The village of Pebworth is bordered 5km to the north by Dorsington and 4km north-east by Long Marston, which today are both in Warwickshire.  Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Pebworth is also known as one of the Shakespeare villages.

Banns for the marriage of Daniel Sollis and Amelia Powell were read  in the Parish Church in Honington on the 5th, 12th and 19th October, 18342.  They were then married  on the 20th October3.  This record indicates not only were they married after Banns, they also had Consent of Parents.  Generally the consent of parents is needed if one or the other is under age, however, this does not seem to be the case and it is a mystery why consent was given or needed.  The service was conducted by the Vicar, William Hoskins.  Daniel is said to have been from the Parish of Pebworth and Amelia from Honington.  Both Daniel and Amelia made their mark and the witnesses were Robert Merriman and Mary Horseman.

Honington is approximately 15km south-east of Pebworth.  When Earl Leofric founded the Priory of Coventry, in 1043, he endowed it with 24 vills, of which the first to be named was Honington.  About 1685, Sir Henry Parker built Honington Hall, which replaced a much earlier manor house.  A supposition can be made that both Daniel and Ann were possibly working on, or in the grounds of, this estate.

According to Census records4 Amelia was born in Dilwyn, Herefordshire around 1807.  A possible Baptism for her has been located in Awre, Gloucestershire.  This record indicates she was born on 12th February and baptised on 3rd May 1807, her parents recorded as James and Mary1.  Dilwin is abouth 80km north-west of Pebworth, and approximately 65km north-north-east of Awre.  Awre is roughly 83km south-south-west of Honington.  It is assumed that Amelia's father was an agricultural labourer who most likely moved constantly for work.

The next record held of Daniel and Amelia is the 1841 Census4, when they were living in the small Hamlet of Broad Marston, in the Parish of Pebworth, Gloucestershire.  Daniel's age is given as 31, his occupation an Agricultural Labourer, his wife Emeila is age 31, both are recorded as born in Gloucestershire.  With them are children: John 5; Job 4; and Charles 2.

By 18514 they are living at Lower Farm, Bretforton.  Daniel is recorded as 43 and a Labourer, his wife Amelia is 40, with them are sons: John 15; Job 12; Charles 11; and George age 5, he married Sarah Ann Robins 1864.  Daniel's place of birth is recorded as Pebworth, Gloucestershire, Amelia's as Dilwyn, Hertfordshire, and all the sons are said to have been born in Pebworth, Gloucestershire.

The 1861 Census4 shows the family living at Claybrook, Badsey.  Daniel is now recorded as a 54year old Shepherd, Amelia as a 53year old Agricultural Labourer, son Job 24, a Carter, Charles 21 and George 16, both Agricultural Labourers.  Daniel & Amelia's birthplaces are recorded as in the 1851 Census.

Daniel's wife Amelia, aged 55, died in Bretforton on the 8th April, 18635.  Her death was registered the same day by Mary Lippett, who was present at the death.  Recorded as the Wife of Daniel Sollis an Agricultural Labourer, the cause of death was stated as Inflammation.  Amelia was buried, possibly in St Leonards Churchyard, in Bretforton on the 10th April 18636.

According to the 1871 Census, Daniel is back in Bretforton, at the Village4.  His age is recorded as 65, his occupation still an Agricultural Labourer, and it appears he may have remarried, as his wife is now given as Mary, age 62, born Cow Honeybourne, Gloucestershire, with them is Daniel’s son Job, now age 30.  A record of a Daniel Solis marrying a Mary in Evesham in 1867 has been located, but has not been confirmed that this record relates to our Daniel.  Interestingly Mary is listed in the Marriage Index as Solis.

On the 1881 Census4, Daniel is listed as living with his wife Mary at Lower End, Bretforton.  Daniel is now a 74year old Agricultural Labourer, birthplace Gloucestershire, wife Mary is a 72year old Nurse.

Listed as an 84year old Inmate of the Evesham Union Workhouse on the 1891 Census4, Daniel is recorded as being Married and an Agricultural Labourer, his place of birth as given as Broad Marston, Worcestershire.  Evesham Union workhouse was built in 1837 at a site on the south bank of the river Avon at Little Hampton.  It was based upon a cruciform layout and was to accommodate up to 200 inmates.  After 1938, it was renamed Evesham Community Hospital, and except for the chapel and the infirmary building of 1870, all the workhouse buildings have been demolished and the area is used as a car park.   The chapel now houses a Pharmacy and the old infirmary building is used by the hospital's catering services.

Daniel died in the Union Workhouse at Hampton, Worcestershire, on the 28th February, 18925.  He was 85years old, and his occupation was recorded as formerly a Farm Labourer of Bretforton.  The Informant was the Master of the Workhouse Mr William Guivin, and cause of death recorded as Senile Decay, certified by A. H. Marlin M.R.C.S.  Medical terms pre-1900 were rather looser than those in use today,  and at the time Senile Decay generally referred to the progressive loss of mental capacity and personal helplessness. The majority of the cases recorded were most likely to have been Dementia or Alzheimer's disease.  Daniel was buried in Bretforton on the 3rd March, 18926, possibly in St Leonards Churchyard.
