Origin / History of the Sutton Name

Thought to be from the Norman race, this is an English topographical name usually denoted where a man lived.  Derived from the Olde English elements 'suth', south and 'tun', an enclosure or village, which is a common element in many areas of England.  Consequently, the name means 'the settlement of a main village'.  Records indicate the first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ketel de Sudtone, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Lincolnshire, during the reign of King William 1, known as 'William the Conqueror', 1066 - 1087, while Alnod Suttuna was recorded in 1086 in Cambridgeshire in the Ancient Records of Ely. The surname appears a number of times in the 1379 Poll Tax Records of Yorkshire as 'de Sutton', the 'de' prefix meaning 'of'.  Interesting name bearers include Oliver Sutton bishop of Lincoln (1280 - 1299), who joined Archbishop Winchelsey in resisting the taxation imposed by Edward 1 in 1296; Thomas Sutton (1532 - 1611) founder of the Charterhouse, London, who was thought to be the richest commoner in England; & Robert Sutton (1594 - 1668) first Baron Lexington, who fought on the side of Charles 1.

Coat of Arms / Crest
A Coat of Arms is bestowed upon individuals, not families and are not transferable.  Crests are handed down and derived by family members
.

During earlier times more than forty-nine Coats of Arms have been awarded to families named Sutton.  It would appear the most ancient Sutton family Coat of Arms was a gold shield, with a green lion rampart.  The crest was a lion emerging from a crown atop a knights helmet.  The motto 'Pou y parvenir', which translated means 'To accomplish it'.  There is no evidence to suggest this Coat of Arms is related to this Sutton line.
