John Waters and Martha Crayford ©

Very little is known about John & Martha, but it is believed they were both born around 1735, and lived and worked in the Withyham area of East Sussex.  Although to-date no positive baptism records have been located, nor any information that would indicate occupation or parents of either John or Martha.

On the 30th November, 1763, John Waters married Martha Crayford, after Bann, in St Michaels, the Parish Church of Withyham1.  They were both from the parish and both signed their names.  The Curate E. Boyce performed the service and the witnesses were T Spencer and J Hall.

Records indicate John & Martha had nine children, all baptized in Withyham:  Thomas 1764; Stephen 1766; Joseph 1768; Martha 1770; Mary 1772, she married Edward Quaif 1792; Richard 1773; William 1775-c1776; Elizabeth 1776; and William 1777.

A burial record for a Martha Waters, in Withyham, on the 7th March, 17882, has been located.  It is estimated she was around 53years old.

At the approximate age of 57, John was buried, also in Withyham, on the 2nd September, 17922.
