John Whyate and Susanna Grant ©

John Whyate is believed to be the son of William Whyate and his wife Elizabeth, and that he was baptised on the 23rd May, 1680, in Alveston, Warwickshire1.

It is further believed John married Susannah Grant, in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, on the 14th December, 17122.  Often known simply Shakespeare's Church, due to its fame as the place of baptism and burial of William Shakespeare.  The original building dates from 1210 and was built on the site of a Saxon monastery.  It is Stratford's oldest building, in a striking position on the banks of the River Avon, and has long been England's most visited parish church.

Stratford has Anglo-Saxon origins, and developed as a market town during the medieval period.  The original charters of the town were granted in 1196, making Stratford over 800years old.  The name is a combination of the Old English ‘straet’, meaning street, and ‘ford’, indicating a site at which a road forded a river.

It is unclear when or where Susanna was born, however a possible baptism has been located in the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene in Richmond, Surrey, on the 21st January 1685, the daughter of William Grant.

Located over 150km south of Alveston, Warwickshire, it is not known when, why or how Susanna or her family ended up in Warwickshire.  However after her marriage to John the couple appeared to have settled in Warwickshire and it is believed they had had at least three children: William; 1714, Susannah 1715, she married John Gibbs 1741; and John 1721.

A record for the burial of a John Whyate has been located in Alveston on the 26th June, 17213, sadly it suggests only 5 days after his birth baby John may have died.  Or it is also possible this is the burial of his father as to-date no other positive burial record has been located.  If the burial of John senior he would have been 41years old.

Susanna was about 60years old, when she was buried in Alveston, on the 15th August, 17453 .
