Origin / History of the Wood Name

This English and Scottish surname is of Olde English origins, is most likely derived from the word ‘wude’ meaning a forest or wood.    In the overwhelming majority of cases a geographical name for someone who lived in or by a wood or a metonymic occupational name for a woodcutter or a forester.  May also be from a nickname for a mad, eccentric, or violent person from Middle English 'wod' - mad, frenzied as in 'Adam le Wode' - Adam the Mad Worcester 1221.  It can be recorded in several forms including Wood, Woode, Woodd, Wod, Wode and the locational Woods and Woodes.

Coat of Arms are not transferable, but may be handed down and derived by direct descendents of the original holder. 

 It would appear there are several Coats of Arms for the Wood family name, but at least two feature an oak tree on a silver shield.  The crest bears the following motto, 'Tutus in Undis', which is translated means 'Safe on the Waves'.
