John Wood and Phoebe Clapham ©

A search of the Finedon parish registers suggest that John was the son of Thomas Wood and his wife Jane.  The record states he was born on the 26th March, 1773 and baptized on the 17th May the same year1, in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin Finedon.

At the age of 34 John  married Phoebe Clapham, by Banns, in the Findeon Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin on the 9th February, 18072.  the record tells us they were both from the Parish, John was a Labourer, and Phoebe a Spinster.

Phoebe, the daughter of William Clapham and his wife Martha (nee Smith), was born on 18th October, 1784 and was baptized on the 6th January17851, also in the Finedon Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin.

A search of parish records around Finedon and Ancestry Family Trees indicate John and Phoebe had at least 9 children: Mary 1805, she married John Buckby 1826; John 1811; Martha 1812; William 1814; Gabrielle 1817; Joseph 1819; James 1820; Phoebe 1822 and Thomas 18271.

On the 13th September, 1834, at the age of 53, John died.  He was buried in the Finedon Parish Churchyard 3days later on the 16th September3

Phebe has been found on the 18412 census in Finedon, Northamptonshire.  Age 55, Phebe is living with: John age 30, Gabriel age 20, Martha Clapham age 10 and James Wood age 4.  It is thought John & Gabriel are her sons and the other three children possibly her grandchildren.

The 18512 census had Phoebe, a 65 year old Widow living in Finedon and her occupation is given as pauper (Lacemaker).  With her are daughter Phebe age 27 a Pauper, son Thomas age 23 a Shoemaker, grandsons James age 14 and George age 9 both recorded as Shoemaker apprentices.  All are recorded as being born in Finedon.

Still in FInedon in 18612, Phoebe is now age 76 and she has with her, her sister Charlotte Denton a 62 year old Widow, George Parker age 7 and William Parker age 5, both recorded as Grandsons and Scholars, but it is not clear if they are Phoebe's or Charlotte's grandchildren.

By 1871 Phoebe age 86, is living in the household of her son Gabriel and his family in Wood's Yard, South End Street, Finedon2

Phoebe died on the 12th October, 1871 in Finedon5.  She was 89 years old, the Widow of John Wood a Shepherd and the cause of death was given as Old Age.  Her death was register by Harriett Houghton, who was in attendance, on the 14th October.  Harriett is listed on the 1871 Census as the next door neighbour of Gabrielle and his family.  Phoebe was laid to rest in the Finedon Parish Churchyard on the 15th October3.
