John Mitchell was a member of the Union Church Presbyterian Church in Union Church, Jefferson County, MS. John applied for membership and was accepted October 10, 1845. Candice, Lilly, Edny, Augusta, and Watt were the Mitchell slaves who were also members of UCPC. Look for them on the servants membership list where you will find the dates of their application, acceptance and baptismal.

Johm Mitchell died February 22, 1859 in Jefferson County, MS.

John's son John Irvin Mitchell owned 69 slaves in 1860 per the 1860 Jefferson County Slave Schedule. The senior John made a deed of gift in 1852, giving his son 45 slaves. Most of the slaves named in John's inventory list were given to his daughter Sally Mitchell McMillan via John's 1852 will. Sally was the wife of Dougald McMillan of Caseyville, Copiah County, MS. Dougald owned 90 slaves per the 1860 Copiah County Slave Schedule.
