The Best Years of Your Life

They are when you exult in each new day
They are when you breathe in the air with a passion beyond comprehension
When life is at its brightest peak
And the mountains’ breath is a distant fog.

They are whenever your heart is full and joyous
When each star seems to sing to you and dance for your amusement
And your eyes are full and bright of the hope of each moment
Living in your cells like a map to the future.

When we are young, we feel these things.
We worship the pleasure and the pain with equal measure,
Exploring the open universe with open palms
And we need no explanation.
We dance with the rhythm of the universe
Are one with the brilliant moment as it shines for us alone.

When each day bursts with new life
When each smell and circumstance is ripe and full
When consequence is just an abstract word
And fear a miniscule moment in our minds
These are the best days of our lives.

Worship them for the wonders they are.
Photograph each moment in your mind.
And when you are old and tired
They will carry you
Like those brilliant stars
Through the darker days.
