Pixie and Dixie were adorable little beagle puppies when we adopted them, cute as could be and full of ginger. Unfortunately, my memories of them are brief, because I was very young, and because they were *too* full of energy.
They had a bad habit of jumping the fence and escaping the yard, which was not a good thing to happen to not-too-bright little puppies in the neighborhood. I found out how bad a thing this was one day when I saw one of them, a block away as I chased after her, get hit by a car. I was devastated. I think I have blocked out a lot of the memory of that day, but I still get extremely upset when I see a dog hit by a car.
The surviving puppy went quickly to a farm, where
there was less of a chance s/he would be killed or injured. I like
to think s/he lived out the rest of his/her days, frolicking in the sunshine
and happy as could be.
