Using Houseplants to Purify the Air

Using Houseplants to Purify the Air

Take a deep breath. Do you know the air you breathe indoors could be more toxic than the air outside? Household pollutants can be found lurking in almost every part of your home. Carpet, foam insulation, plastics, cleaners and paints are just a few examples that release toxins you inhale everyday.

Finding a Solution

The good people at NASA did a study using houseplants to determine if they could indeed purify the air inside a space shuttle. To our delight their findings show that houseplants can play a wonderful roll in purifying indoor air. You don't have to be residing in a space shuttle for this news to benefit you. Anyone with environmental concerns can remove dangerous chemicals from their own living space.

Purifying Houseplants

Surprisingly some of the best purifiers are also some of the easiest houseplants to grow. NASA's list of best purifying house plants includes Spider plants, English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Fiscus, Mother-in-law's Tongue, Peace Lily and Pothos.

How Many Houseplants?

Estimates of the number of houseplants needed for a 1200 square foot home would be 12. However, the more houseplants you invite into your home will not only will be adding to your decor but could very well be improving your health. You can exhale now.
