THE GREGORIAN CHOIR

The Gregorian choir was formed in 2001 under the initiative of the GOCF members in Muscat who are devout music lovers with a commitment to worship in discipline and harmony. In a short span of time due to the dedicated leadership of the Gregorian Choir Master Mr. George Varghese Thengumthottam, and the concerted efforts of all the choir members, the choir has reached reputable heights, and is now well known among the music loving Christian community in Muscat.

Since its inception, the Choir had many opportunities to perform on various platforms. In December 2002, the members of the Gregorian choir, who are also members of MGOC Muscat actively participated and took the lead in the X'mas Carol Service of MGOC Church Muscat. The Xmas Choir was trained and conducted by Mr. George Varghese Thengumthottam, our Choir Master. The performance of the carol was well appreciated by all unprejudiced audience, the first time sung in four parts in the church. It was acclaimed to be the best Xmas Carols ever presented in MGOC. This inspired and encouraged the Gregorian's to venture into recording the maiden Music album which is a collection of Christian Devotional songs . The CD was released by HH. Baselius Marthoma Mathews II’nd , the Catholicos of the East, at Devalokam Aramana Kottayam, by giving a copy to Rev. Fr. M.P.George, Director, Sruthi School of Liturgical Music. It may be noted here that the entire proceeds from the album was disbursed for charity.

The Gregorian choir had recorded Two Choral episodes of Christian devotional singing (both audio and video) for the television program named "AKALANGALIL" telecast in two episodes by Doordarshan Channel "DD-4", during the months of Dec '01 and Jan '02. Akalangalil was a weekly episode and included varied programmes shot all around the word featuring NRI’s and their Social & community life . The program was directed by J.M Raju (Christian Arts Fame, Madras).

In December 2003, the Gregorian Choir presented 2 episodes (lasting 30 minutes each) of Christmas Carols on ASIANET TV with the blessings of H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews II’nd , the Catholicos of the East, and also with the patronage of H.G Philipos Mar Eusebius, the Patron of GOCF Muscat. Both the episodes were well received. The most critical of music lovers, and those from various Christian denominations had all praise for this program which was presented in a highly professional manner.

Music has bound the Gregorian's together strongly, and we pray that Gregorian voice will reverberate in this desert coastal city of Muscat praising the Lord, and to impress upon the large community of Christians who appreciate and respect the traditional way of Orthodox worship. The Choir consists of around 40 members including our highly talented youngsters and children. It is the Gregorian's commitment to preserve, nurture and hand down to our next generation a flawless Orthodox tradition rich in values, with the hope that it be preserved for years to come.
