Holt County's Historical Society
Fortescue ChurchThe present building was built in 1896 by the Methodist Episcopal South congregation of Craig, MO. No longer used, the structure was obtained through the efforts of Dr. Brower, with the cooperation of the Craig Methodist congregation. Taken apart and moved in sections, many recall watching as the building moved slowly toward Fortescue. A local newspaper read, "Church Takes A Ride". Beds of both the Tarkio river south of Craig and the Little Tarkio river west of Bigelow had to be filled in for the church sections to cross. This was in October 1953. An annex that included modern restrooms, a dining room, and a kitchen was added along with an up-to-date heating system. Dedication of the building was Sunday, December 12, 1954. In the spring of 1997, planning to merge with the Mound City United Methodist Church, the administrative board offered the building and grounds to the Holt Co. Historical Society. The church is available for weddings, family functions, and meetings. A church history area and collections library are being established in former classrooms.
