Holt County's Historical Society
Ball-Roupe Homestead This farm was homesteaded in 1849 by John Hinkle who came to Holt Co. from Franklin Co., Missouri. He was accompanied by his widowed daughter Elizabeth Ann Hinkle Haigler and her seven children. Elizabeth's son John Wesley Haigler acquired the property and built the brick house in 1869. About 1885 he sold the home to Dr. Joseph L. Minton, who lived there until 1887 when it was sold to John C. Hinkle. John C. was a son of Adam Hinkle and nephew of John who had homesteaded the land. John's daughter Alpha married Harry Ball and lived in the brick house her entire life. After her death, the property was given to the Holt Co. Historical Society by her grandson Mark Roupe of Topeka Kansas. The beautiful Gothic style brick home features impressive entry with an open stairway. Renovation continues to restore it to its original grandeur. The brick smokehouse and root cellar are believed to have been built at the same time period as the house.
