The Old Fortescue School

The Fortescue School District was organized in 1907 with its territory composed of Lake Shore, east side of the Walker, south part of Elm Grove, and north part of Idlewilde. Land was purchased from Isaac and Mary Minton on July 3, 1907. A two-story 26 foot by 40 foot structure was erected. This simply designed building was constructed of brick made and burned on the site, and lumber was also sawed on the grounds. Erection of the new school began the first week of August 1907 and was completed in time for the opening of the school on October 7. This school served students until 1915 when a larger schoolhouse was erected. Renovation and preservation of the building are in progress.
