Meet Skipper the Sourdough Mascot

In creating these pages I wanted to generate an atmosphere of a warm cabana on the island where people could gather to tell or listen to stories. But then I had to decorate the inside of the cabana, which is what we call the little houses left behind by the military after WWII.

A souvenir of frontier life seemed appropriate, and so I hung a musket and powder horn on the wall, and a place to sit was a good idea. Is it just me or is there nothing like a good rocking chair?

And of course there must always be a family heirloom like my grandfather's violin. There is quite a story behind that instrument!

But in a seafaring town every house needs a cat to catch or keep away the mice and rats that come in on the ships and which have proliferated on the island. The foxes, cats, eagles and ravens have all done their best, but the rats breed as fast as they are eaten or killed. So I chose Skipper to be my cabana cat. He's not too fancy for frontier life, just an ordinary cat who keeps his territory free of rodents. He's a friendly guy with a nice face and a nicer purrrsonality. Of course, being a cat, he runs the cabana with an iron paw, but it is sheathed in velvety fur.

When Skipper isn't bossing me around or catching rodents he has his toys to play with and you will notice that on different pages he is featured with a toy appropriate to the story being told. When he isn't playing with a toy he may be doing the favorite thing all cats like to do, sitting on the pages of the book I was going to read or enjoying some delicacy served for his dinner. Enjoy your visit here at my cabana.

By the way, I got my original Skipper graphic out of an internet animal shelter known as "Cat Stuff." Click on the logo to visit them and check out the other kitties waiting to be adopted.
