2001 Reviews
November 2, Santa Monica, CA at McCabes
Thanks to Gina and Ed for the following info
It was a very special night. Lucy said that
it was the type of night where she wanted to play all night. As it was, the
concert didn't end until 11:15 and I would say that it started around 8:15.
Alice Peacock opened. She was delightful - funny and cute. She sang a few
good songs, but her most shining moment was when she sang harmonies on the
second encore for the song Guinevere. It was awesome. Lucy just looked over
at Alice with a big, wide grin. Alice didn't see it because she had her eyes
closed and was just completely, passionately involved with the moment.
Lucy played with Nina Gerber who was fabulous. They seemed to have a good old
time together. And then Matt Casteonis (sorry if I have the name spelled
wrong) came out and played mandolin for several songs. He is an awesome
player whom I have seen before.
Lucy was the best I have ever heard her. It was an evening that just came
together very well - like a good hair day. She told the Ricola story, sang
the Pi song and the Alphabet song. She was quite amazed that people in the
audience were familiar with her new album.

A (literally) standing room only crowd at Berkeley's venerable Freight &
Salvage coffee house greeted Lucy Friday night. It was a warm October
evening, and Lucy and her special guest Nina Gerber treated the packed house
to an amazing show.
Alice Peacock opened with a brief, but entertaining set. I can't say I was
familiar with any of her songs, and Alice jokingly realized that most of us in
the audience were in that boat. Introducing a song from her upcoming second
CD, she said, "This is a new song.....but, hey, they're all new to you,
right?" She is charming, shows great humor and stage presence and strong
voice. At the end of the evening, she joined Lucy and Nina Gerber onstage for
"Guinevere," the night's final song.
Lucy hit the stage at about 9:00 p.m., wearing a black top and brown leather
pants. Her voice was strong, and she seemed genuinely thrilled by the raucous
response she received from the crowd. The set list was basically the same as
we've seen posted recently, with one or two changes. My wife and I always
seem to end up sitting right behind Lucy's Mom and Dad at these shows, and
tonight was no different. Lucy's Dad joined her at the piano on stage (as he
always does at the Freight) and the two did "The Alphabet Song" and the "Pi"
song. And, as usual, the elder Dr. K. pretty much stole the show. Their good
natured bickering onstage led Lucy two describe the two of them as "the
Oedipal Sonny and Cher."
I've been amazed by Nina Gerber's guitar playing since I first saw her backing
Nanci Griffith at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in about
1985. Nina is nothing short of phenomenal, and her playing last night (both
electric and acoustic) was subtle, tasteful, and at times downright amazing.
She added tremendous color and depth to Lucy's songs. In the past, I've
sometimes thought that some of Lucy's performances lose a little bit in the
pure solo acoustic context. Nina's playing really helped bring the songs to
life. Two highlights for me were her dazzling acoustic turn on "Peace, Love
and Understanding" and her electric background in the encore of "Mary
Magdalene," a song she initial declined to play, claiming she "didn't know it"
and had "never heard it before." Simply amazing, and Lucy obviously thought
so as well, judging by the huge smiles on her face. (Lucy actually lost track
of the lyrics at one point in "Mary Magdalene" and had to be prompted by the
audience, exclaiming--quite credibly--that she got distracted by Nina's
amazing accompaniment).
The California legislature should pass a law requiring Lucy and Nina to play
together every time Lucy sets foot in California. East-coast fans may see
Lucy more often, but the chemistry between the duo tonight more than made up
for the infrequency of Lucy's Northern California appearances!
Wow.
Falcon Ridge Folk Festival July 27-29 2001
Wow...that is all i can say about FR. It was absolutely amazing. I
think every artist I saw was at their best all day. Lucy of course was
fabulous! She looked cute in a pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt..and
the hair was looking great :)
Her set included
Angels Rejoiced Last Night
Written on the Back of His Hand
Don't Mind Me
One Good Reason
By Way of Sorrow
Ten Year Night
Song for Molly
End of the Day -which she forgot the second verse and the audience sang it for
her until she caught up
Turn the Lights Back On
Swimming Song -yeah my request!!!
John Gorka came out and sang with her for a few songs and then she came out
during his set and sang with him.
I went afterwards to meet her-my first time :) She was busy so she asked if i
could meet her after the Bob Dylan workshop so I did. When she came out and
signed my cd and book she was so cute. I had the Songwriters Exchange Cd and
she was showing everyone what she looked like 20 years ago. I thanked her for
her music and told her how much it meant to me and how much it had gotten me
through and then i started crying and she started crying...then we hugged (a lucy hug!!) and she signed my cd "You are so sweet" and the picture in my
"Women Singer Songwriters" book so i could frame it and i took a picture with
her :) Needless to say I was in my bliss!

Another wonderful night with Lucy (and John
Herrington) on Friday. The venue was Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, NJ. The bill was James Keelaghan, Lucy, and Richard Shindell.
James opened, and played a dazzling set of about six songs. Strident and pure, James has a clear voice that draws you in. He has a very easy story-telling style, and my wife and I were dreaming of 13 crosses high above the cold Missouri waters.
Right after that, Lucy came out with John Herrington, and played for 68 minutes. New tunes were mixed in with old favorites, and covers.
Small Dark Movie
Back Of Your Hand
End Of The Day
Nowhere
Don't Mind Me (Play Your Song For Me)
Ten Year Night (w/ RS)
By Way Of Sorrow (w/ RS)
More Than This (Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music cover). John was not on stage for this. He could make a great Phil Manzanara.
Time To Go
One Good Reason
Turn The Lights Back On
The Swimming Song Scorpion (w/ RS)
E: Speaking With The Angel (w/ RS)
Once again, John Herrington made the songs come alive. Contrary to some RS Listers, Lucy should have played longer. She was vibrant, and full of energy. What a great night!

the Mansion in Middletown, NY March 12, 2000
What an afternoon! I had the fine pleasure of meeting Claire, and witnessing one of the best LK performances I've ever seen.
The venue was the Mansion at Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY. At 3:00PM, Lucy came out dressed in a fake black fur outfit, with a white collar, and white cuffs before a packed room of about 65 people. The setlist: I need help with some of the new songs:
Set 1:
He Thinks I Still Care (?) (The George Jones tune)
One Good Reason
Don't Mind Me
Speaking With The Angel
Ten Year Night
No More Excuses
Crazy Dreams
You're My Role Model
Broken Things
This Is Mine
Set 2:
Nowhere
End Of The Day
The Ballad Of Mary Magdalene
Scorpion
Five In The Morning
Turn The Lights Back On
That's Mathematics
A Song About Pi
For Once In Your Life
By Way Of Sorrow
E: Guinevere
E: Return Of The Grievous Angel
When Lucy asked for requests, someone yelled out for "Freebird", which brought a chuckle from Lucy. I thought about asking for "Free Man In Paris", but declined.
Lucy was in fine spirits, and her new material was sensational. As with her earlier songs like "End Of The Day", and "This Is Mine", the new material is centered about strong characters, and other people who have affected Lucy's life. The strong characters are what draws to me Lucy's music.
Afterwards, I had a nice chat with Rick. He mentioned that Richard Shindell has seen Cry Cry Cry items being auctioned off on Ebay. Can anyone confirm this?
Rick also talked about the Ten Year Lie, something about Lucy learning to drive for the first time. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
