In pursuit of Rana pipiens in an old field

img

A really closeup look! Here you can see exactly what goes on "behind the scenes" with each and every picture! Many miles traveled...... wet feet, and countless places visited to get the stunning images seen in the Fabulous Froggage project. The "easy" part is sitting here at the computer typing in the code, and editing the pictures..... but this particular page shows the much DEEPER part....... actually being out there among the frogs!

This is not by any means a comprehensive page, showing lots of images, many species, etc, but is more of a glimpse to what happens behind each image. When you click any image, it will take you to another picture showing me taking the picture of the specimen shown. Keep in mind that in some cases dozens of pictures are taken of each frog (unless it hops away!), and only the very best ones are used for Fabulous Froggage, and also you'll have a link to click on to see the large image of the actual frogs shown on this page.

All images here were taken in beautiful Quebec.

Rana pipiens

"ON THE ROAD AGAIN" See the original image! This one was tracked thru the nearby meadow, and with three of us there we forced it to the road, where it sat still and provided some nice pictures.

Rana pipiens

"BLENDING IN" See the original image! Here's one, as bright and beautiful as it is, all but disappears when is rests motionless in the grass!

Rana pipiens

"FROG ON THE ROCKS" See the original image! Here's a basking N. Leopard frog, which allowed a close daytime approach!

Rana clamitans melanota

"A NORTHWOODS BEAUTY" See the original image! This is perhaps one of the most beautiful frogs I have ever seen of this species!

Rana clamitans melanota

"A TAILED 'JUVIE'" See the original image! Quite young...... and not too camera-shy, this one allowed close approach!

Rana clamitans melanota

"PEEKABOO!" See the original image! Another "Northwoods beauty" here, sneaking a peak from amid the muck :-)

Rana clamitans melanota

"LATE-NIGHT SNACK" See the original image! Well, it looks like frog legs are on the menu tonight for this one! This is living proof that it's a "frog-eat-frog" world out there :-)

Rana clamitans melanota

"AMONG THE SWARMS" See the original image! I remember the mosquitoes were vicious that day, as were the black flies, and I had the bites to prove it afterward...... but now this itching is long-gone...... and this beautiful picture remains!

Rana clamitans melanota

"A REAL BEAUTY" See the original image! Georges spotted this one, and I decided to take a closer look, and I'm happy I did! This is a truly beautiful specimen!

Rana septentrionalis

"IN THE CREEK" See the original image! A young one here, and I selected this one because of its unusual coppery color.

Rana septentrionalis

"MINK IN THE MUCK" See the original image! In the far-North, the mud can be quite deep, and the Mink frog likes these mucky areas, with a lot of floating vegetation, lily pads, etc, and the only way to get shots like this is to pick a warm rainy night, and prepare to get wet!

Rana septentrionalis

"A DAYTIME DELIGHT" See the original image! This one allowed me to make a very close approach, even in the heat of the day, when most frogs are fast out-of-sight upon the approach of people!

Rana septentrionalis

"AMONG THE REEDS" See the original image! This particular location had MANY Mink frogs present, and I was literally seeing them at every turn - right in broad daylight! For a "froggy fact", about 75% of all the images on Fabulous Froggage" are taken at night!

Rana catesbeiana

"A REALLY BIG BULLFROG" See the original image! In the suburbs of Montreal lurks this really big Bullfrog, and thankfully it let me get close enough to allow for a decent picture of it!

Thanks for checking out one of my newest Web-projects (September 2010 - updated June 2012). Also a very special thanks to my friend Georges Huard for supplying many of these pictures!
