Jack O' Lantern
Jack O' Lantern is the name of the King of the Devon Pixies. Consort to Joan the Wad, Jack appears appears as a collection of flickering, wavering, glowing lights low to the ground near marshes, meadows, and grassy hillocks. These lights are most easily seen an hour or so after sundown and are also known as Faery Lights, Hobbedy's Lantern, St. Elmo's Fire, Elf Fire, Will-o'-the-Whisp and Hunky Punky.
These golden lights which are seen glittering enticingly in the distance have never been explained by science. Many pagans believe them to be the lights of faery revels, or even of an open burgh. Other explanations are that these are the lights of trooping faeries on their Rades, or that they are the wandering souls of discarnate humans. When one approaches them they vanish, often appearing again just out of reach as if playing a game of tag.
