poetry by Lee

I could sense the smell of sulphur,
From the cannons on the wall,
To keep the unfriendly ships,
From comming in at all.
Many were brick tunnels,
That were leading to the front,
To protect the weary soldiers,
From the strangers on the hunt.
Their guns were staffed with bayonettes,
As they fought upon the ground.
It took one minute to reload,
Between each and every round.
But then in days of waiting,
Life was simple, so to speak,
I've seen an oven, Built in the wall,
With sticks to make the heat.
Chicken cages, were just out door,
For the eggs, each early morn.
Eggs & grits, and corn bread biscuits,
Were served so nice & warm.
Many times, the days ran on,
With nothing else to do,
I saw a little, hand painted table,
And checkers, so very crude.
The ghostly soldiers, return each month,
To continue with their war,
It was the only life, they ever knew,
The mission, of their life before.
But Our Lord protects His courageous Angels,
Who defended this great land,
Though violence, is against our nature,
We at times, must make a stand.
