THE FIELD OF ATHENRY
Back to Homepage.

Athenry is an ancient town near Galway, west of Ireland. This lovely song has been taken on by Glasgow Celtic (catholic football team) as their theme song (apart from being Irish in origin, the reason for this escapes me) and so has been sung less and less in folk clubs as it is now seen as being sectarian/catholic, which is a shame.

The Fields of Athenry

By lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling.
"Michael, they're taking you away,
For you stole Travallian's corn
So the young might see the morn,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."

Chorus
Low lies the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free bird fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing.
So lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man calling,
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free.
It's the Empire and the Crown,
I rebel, they cut me down,
Now you must raise our son with dignity."

Chorus

By lonely harbour wall,
She watched the last hour falling,
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she knelt and she did pray
For her love on Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
