The Southern Cross Greens

The Earth First movement for a political/

social renewal of Australia

We live on an ancient continent, so different to anywhere else on earth and with finely balanced eco-systems, totally unsuitable to sustain continuous exploitation, and are now consuming our ecological capital instead of living off the yield.

We must move from the capitalist's nirvana of consumerism and materialism in a "Global Village", to sustainable living in a national organic society.

The SCG seek real change in society in Australia, by pursuing a strategy to replace the present system of government, without conforming to the agenda of the economic and political elites. The aim is to achieve the ideas of fundamental rights and of liberty by liberating the citizen from the vested interests of the Establishment political parties.

These parties especially aim to keep citizens stultified into believing people have a real say in present day political/economic/cultural affairs. Their mouthpiece hacks are a fraud in the service of the money changers, and themselves. They talk a lot about democracy but in truth strive to hinder the free citizen.

We pursue a free democratic society in the sense of a community of solidarity. The creation of an open society with the courage to allow values which combine achievement with a sense of responsibility for mankind and nature. This occupies the center of our political interests.

Internationalism vs National Self-Sufficiency

Politics is no longer defined by the struggle between the so called "Left and Right". The politics of the 21st century will be divided between Nationalists and Globalists/ Internationalists: between those who see their native soil and community as an interconnected web of life, and those who see only a collection of resources to be exploited for maximum short-term profit – the money changers values and objectives.

Tasmanian Tiger

In an international economy, the worth of vanishing species and natural resources is disregarded under the guise that these cannot be easily quantified, that they are to be exploited. Instead economic indicators rise with every automobile accident, with every oil spill, and with every newly diagnosed cancer patient.

In a national self-sufficient economy, progress would be redefined to exclude acceptance of the liquidation of nature as income; enterprises would be held responsible for their products from cradle to grave; new economic indicators would be applied to account for the social and ecological costs of such products.

Our Fundamental Values

Liberty

Liberty needs to be protected from oppression by the prevailing political system. There is therefore no liberty without order. However, liberty also means responsibility. Responsibility for oneself is the best protection from outside domination. The greater the sense of responsibility the less necessity there is for regulatory intervention. Decency, honour and morality should determine the use of liberty.

Justice

There is no liberty without law and there can be no law without justice. This does not only mean equality before the law, in legislation, in jurisdiction and administration but also social justice: not in the sense of redistribution but rather as the duty of the community to help the needy, the right of the individual to more remuneration for more work and better performance, the recognition of unjustified inequalities.

Home

The avowal of Australia as our Motherland is the basis of our political action. We want to preserve and maintain the natural environment and cultural heritage inherited from our pioneering forefathers in order to hand them on to our descendants in a worthwhile condition. If the family is our smallest communal good, our home Australia with its natural, cultural, and European civilisation is the largest communal good. Love of ones own Motherland corresponds to respect for the home countries of other peoples. This positive form of patriotism is the answer to the utopian fraud of a multicultural society on the other.

Democracy

We stand for a direct democratic republic on the basis of general human and civil rights. Australian democratic tradition of popular authority would guarantee the highest degree of liberty and justice.

Population

Australia is now extensively overpopulated resulting in a continuing decline in bio-diversity, appalling soil degradation, and falling quality of life for many citizens. In addition to feeding some 20 million people here, exports feed another 50 million [500 million by third world standards], a totally unsustainable situation. Independent environmentalists suggest under 10 million is the optimum population for Australia. The SCG would disband all immigration entirely, and introduce population criteria into national development.

Jobs

There are many more jobs in a National Self-Sufficient economy than in an international economy. A National Self-sufficient economy promotes the worth of labour, ensures resource use is sustainable, is based on the skills of people, and produces quality products from local resources incorporating local culture.

Taxes

National Self-sufficiency suggests shifting taxes away from personal income to a modern electronic bank debits tax where ALL participate in accord with financial activity - without exception.

Sustainable Forestry

Our bush estate belongs to future generations and provides habitat for other species.

Extensive reforestation of denuded farmland should be undertaken.

Clearcutting should be excluded and the remaining old growth should be preserved. Hemp and kenaf should be grown as alternative sources of paper fibre. Organic fuels should be sourced.

Organic Agriculture

The money changer type agribusiness encourages mono-cropping, chemical farming, centralisation, overprocessing, long-distance transportation and decreased employment. National Self-sufficiency seeks to preserve crop diversity, reconnect the farmer with the consumer and ensure a supply of locally produced, pesticide-free food. All land belongs to the Australian community and use should be under stewardship provisions.

Renewable Energy and Conservation

In view of global climate change, the phasing out fossil fuels and nuclear energy in favor of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, and micro-hydro is required. The transition to sustainable energy can be achieved through improved energy efficiency, conservation and cogeneration.

Life-cycle Product Stewardship

Pollution is resources being wasted. Landfilling is like burying money in the ground. Nothing should be landfilled or released into the air, water or soil. National Self-sufficiency would introduce product-stewardship programs that would require producers to assume the full recycling and disposal costs of their products. Environmentally damaging products and manufacturing methods would be eliminated.

Community Economic Development

International corporations have no stake in the communities where they get their raw materials or where they operate. As a result, resources are overexploited and jobs migrate to where labour is cheapest and environmental standards are lowest. National Self-sufficiency would ensure locally owned and operated businesses that use local resources for value-added production in a sustainable manner, thereby keeping jobs, decision-making and profits in the community.

Guaranteed Income

It is the responsibility of the Australian community to ensure no citizen is excluded from an income from industrious or creative effort if so desired. Welfare and unemployment schemes would be replaced with Citizens Service Corps, providing work, education/training, cultural enhancement, and national defence, all guaranteeing an income from personal contribution. A system of stipend type remuneration to be introduced to recognise the role in society of, and add to the independence of family women.

Pedestrian Communities and Rail

Trains concentrate development while cars encourage sprawl. National Self-sufficiency would revitalize the rail system for long-distance haulage and passenger travel.

Biodiversity and Wilderness

A conservation strategy is needed to protect biodiversity on an evolutionary scale. Australia needs an extensive system of core reserves, corridors, and buffer zones free from development to accommodate viable, self-reproducing, genetically diverse native plant and animal species. Urban regions would be reinvigorated by interconnected bush estate corridors.
