From the Crystal Spring intersection of Rt. 70 and 643 , travel west 1.3 miles toward Gapsville on S. Breezewood Rd. At that point turn left onto Oak Grove Rd. Travel another 2.2 miles, within that distance bearing to the left as the road climbs the hill. Just before the 2.2 mile point the road will enter a wooded area and curve alternately lef t then right. At the 2.2 mile point the road will bend to the right. As the road starts to bend there will be a dirt lane into the woods. Turn here and watch the ruts! Drive to the gated fence, stop, and look left. There will be an old fence around a clearing. The grave is in the left corner along the tree line with a small number of other gravestones.
The inscription engraved on the headstone reads:
"Anthony Spade
Died
Sep. 26 1901
Aged
70 Yr’s. 4 Mo’s.
&
10 D’s.
Blessed are the dead
who die in the Lord"
The inscription engraved on the other side of the headstone reads:
"Rosina D.
Died
Aged"
In the book of death records at the Fulton County, Pennsylvania courthouse, his death date is recorded as 9/26/1901 which matches the headstone. The book’s recording date was 12/3/1901. This would make his birth date May 16, 1831.
Of note is the fact that in various photos family members have taken of this head stone over the years that it has been turned 90 degrees from the orientation in this photograph. This is disturbing because it’s not clear who would know where he is actually buried.
Rosina may not be buried on this grave site. Her name is on the opposite side of the gravestone, but no dates are engraved. We understand that the Snyder Church to which they belonged burned around 1930 and the cemetery was presumably abandoned. There aren’t many graves there and it’s barely 25% full.
