UPDATE: 6/27/00

Hope these pictures add something to your efforts on this project of yours. It seems I don’t have much in the way of current pictures.

Except for about a two year period, a black lab has been a constant companion of mine since about 1965. I got the first one during my last college stint at CSU. Like people, each dog has a unique personality.

I usually work doing construction carpentry in Alaka. I started working in Alaka in 1970 and decided to move here in 1974. It provided me with lots of opportunity for hunting and fishing which I really enjoy.

I am not currently working for anyone. I am in the process of trying to finish my house. This has been a 20 year project.

The reunion would e a lot of fun but I probably won’t make it - Maybe?

Julesburg was a real positive stop in my life. We lived in Sterling before Julesburg and I was really glad to leave Sterling but not so when we left Julesburg. My mother was a “Number Pleae Operator”

As it turned out, my move to Greeley turned out to be a good thing too. This was mostly due to basketball. Over the years I have realized what a great privilege it was to play for Jim Baggot. I was able to visit with him once a year for each of the last five years of his life and we spent some enjoyable hours talking basketball.

When we left Julesburg, I figured I would move back there someday but that never happened, of course.

When my mother transferred to Greeley (when Larry and I were in the 8th grade) the Spears came to the rescue. I really didn’t want t leave so I got to spend the remainder of the 8th grade with the Spears family. We had a pretty good basketball team that year.

One thing I really remember is the slumber party the night of 8th grade graduation. We stayed up all night and the next morning Larry’s dad took me out to play golf. I don’t remember how the golf game went but I do remember being extremely tired. That whole year was memorable.

I have been back to Julesburg a few times in recent years and I really don’t think it has changed a whole lot since the 8th grade.

The adults that I remember the most from that time (teachers, etc.) are Jack Stevens and Mr. Hillyer - the band

teacher. Stevens was our Sunday schooll teacher but mainly he kept us involved in sports. He is the one who first started teaching me how to shoot a jump shot.
When I first started school in Julesburg (6th grade transfer) or shortly thereafter, there was an announcement that a band was going to be started. When I walked into the rom, Mr. Hillyer asked if I would like to play bass. I didn’t even know what a bass (tuba) was but I said yes. Another good experience. We lived in a trailer house so getting the tuba in and practicing as quite a deal. If you played for Mr. Hillyer, he insisted that you practice. Also, he didn’t stand for any B.S. There was no horsing around during band practice. When we moved to Greeley, I was in the band there too. I wa so disappointed in the Greeley Junior High and Greeley High School

bands. Discipline was sadly lacking. I had been taught by Mr. Hillyer that music was serious business and the Greeley kids didin’t treat it as seriously as we did in Julesburg.

I come down to the ”Lower 48” every year for about three weeks - usually during February. My mother is living in Flemming (about 20 miles east of Sterling) and this gives me an opportunity to see her.

My favorite hobby is muzzle loading competition. Last year I won a first in the national shooting competition - “running boar” event which was held in Phoenix, Arizona by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association . I also placed second in three other events.

Well, I could ramble on on about the good things about Julesburg but guess I will cut it off.

Your effort and organization on this newspaper project is greatly appreciated. I am giving serious thought to atending the 40th Reunion but if I am unable to attend (I will make an effort to come see you in Granby in the not-to-distant future) - send my best wishes to everyone. I am certain it will be a wonderful time. Take care!
