~ Johnny Vallejos ~
I left Julesburg in my Freshman year. We moved to Sunnyvale, California where I went to Sunnyvale High School. It was a really big class of 350 people. At first I was scared because it was so big, but then it became really fun. The school had a Student Union like colleges have, so during breaks they sold candy bars and snacks. They had a juke box and students would dance---it was like I died and went to Heaven!!! There were 3 big high schools in Sunnyvale and they would all get together to have dances. That was a lot of fun because we got to check out all the girls.

Junior Prom was a LOT of fun. I double dated with another couple. We took our dates to eat in San Francisco, which was 50 miles away. I was driving, and on the way home we ran out of gas!! So, there we were, 2 guys in tuxedos and 2 girls in formals walking along the road in the middle of the night to go get gas. When I finally got my date home at 3:00 AM her redheaded Mom was sitting there smoking a cigarette!!

From my Julesburg school years I remember Miss Banks really well!! One time Kelly Davies was flipping his two false teeth in and out of his mouth with his tongue. Miss Banks came over to him and told him to spit out his gum. He replied that he did not have gum in his mouth. She became more adamant and told him several times to spit out that gum! Finally, she put her hand out and insisted that he spit his gum into her hand---he spit his teeth into her palm and she just stood there staring!! Lora Rae asked me if I remembered how Kelly lost those two front teeth because some of you had been wondering. I do remember that we were going out the front door of the school and he tripped and fell.

I remember Miss Banks marching to the back of the classroom with a ruler in her hand to correct Larry Spears. Larry got out his ruler and when she got there he started to sword fight with her. Another time Raymond Martinez brought a rubber spider to school and laid it on her desk. I can still see her when she finally saw it, she screeched and threw her chair back with her legs spread clear apart.

I was in the service in Germany for about 6 months and was there when the Berlin Wall went up. President Kennedy came and that is when he said, "Ich bin ein Berliner!" I was there!! I saw a lot of celebrities while I was in Germany; Bill Haley (1-2-3-O'clock 4 O'clock Rock!!!), Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell. Lots of really good entertainers that were popular during our time!!

I attended Deanza College in California and got an AA degree in Business Administration but I did not like office work.

I married Cynthia Bradley (who was, coincidentally, born in Vallejo, California). My wife was 18 when I married her 31 years ago. We were married 6 years before we had kids.

We have 2 boys, Mike and Joe.

I coached Little League Soccer for 10 years for my son's team. I had to learn my skills from the 'school of hard knocks' taking seminars and training classes here and there. We had a Soccer Exchange with a Canadian team. We would host a member of their team in our home and they would host us for the game on the following week! It was a lot of fun.

I am a ceramic tile setter, and am working right now on the nuclear submarine, "The Trident." I have also worked on the U.S. aircraft carrier, "The Nimitz." I am going to retire in the Spring of 1996. When we first moved to Poulsbo it was a town about the size of Julesburg, maybe 1200 people. It has seen a lot of growth and is now about 6,000 people. We are about 1 hour from Seattle but we have to take the ferry to get there. We are right on Puget Sound. You women would love the town of Poulsbo as it has a Norwegian accent. We are very close to the Canadian border and were at the Worlds Fair in Vancouver on the hottest day of the year!!

We now live in a wooded area on 2 1/2 acres. When we retire we are going to Ellensburg in Central Washington, back to farming country. We will have 5 acres and build a nice house for just the two of us.

I have a brother in the Yakima area and a sister that still lives in Julesburg. I will be staying with her when I come to the reunion. I hope to come about August 7 or 8 so give me a call if you are in town early. I hope to see Ed Greivel, we used to go jogging together.

My Mom is well and will be in Julesburg in July or August.

UPDATE

I got home about an hour ago, so after I ate, I turned on my computer and had 30 messages waiting for me. You said you wanted a bio of what I have been up to the last five years. Would you believe nothing! Just kidding!

First big event that happened to me is that I retired four years ago this August. Next, we had our first grand baby three years ago. A boy named Nathan William.

A few months after Nate was born we moved to Ellensburg, WA and we built a new home on 5 acres. I work part time at Central Washington University, here in Ellenburg, as a tile setter. I also do other tile jobs as a way to keep me busy.

Three months ago our son and daughter-in-law gave birth to another son, Ryan James. Just what we need more Vallejos.

My wife, Cindy, works part time for a doctor in town. Our youngest son, Joe, just got engaged and will be getting married next March.
